i’m drinking a beer and journaling (BY HAND) a lot of intense feelings about boybands and capitalism but i want to take a sec to chat about my experience seeing one direction perform on GMA this morning.
everything went almost exactly as i expected? like, OF COURSE they’re all just as beautiful in person. OF COURSE their voices sounded a little rough until they got properly warmed up but then they sounded like soulful lil angels. harry asked how many people in the audience were skipping school to be there and then followed that up with, “education is key,” because of course he did. zayn looked half asleep, bless. niall said the cold weather reminded him of ireland and at one point taunted us with a snippet of “talk dirty to me” like the teenage dirtbag ladykiller he is. liam. just. everything about liam. so chiseled. so earnest. louis talking about breakfast and looking like a sneaky field mouse. everything i wanted, everything i hoped.
even better than seeing the five horsemen of my own personal apocalypse in the flesh was the fact that i was tucked quite far in the back of the crowd, surrounded on all sides by excited teen girls and their bemused parents. does anything make me happier than excited enthusiastic teen girls. no question mark because it’s no question, enthusiastic teen girls are everything. these girls were fabulous snarky, too, especially when robin roberts called the boys ONE EDITION (one addition? she never clarified) and E S P E C I A L L Y when the boys got asked about dating/relationships:
INTERVIEWER: “most-asked question: who’s still available? who’s on the market?”
FANS AROUND ME: *audible groan*
GIRL IN FRONT OF ME: “OH MY GOD WE ALREADY KNOW, NO ONE CARES, ASK THEM ABOUT THE MUSIC!!!!”
there was a little girl speaking french behind me who would occasionally mewl “I LOVE U ZAYN” and the teen next to me kept yelling “CUDDLE ME NIALL” and idk, idk, i loved it a lot, i felt inspired. later in the day i was nearly crushed by sudden-onset existential dread and suffocating self-pity but the thought of happy teen girls and their millionaire popstar idols sharing the same air in new york city buoyed me up.
Bullsh!t article by Madeleine.

Kiss You on the Today Show!
Gabrielle Aplin’s cover of 1D’s “Best Song Ever”
I read the article and really what pissed me off more than anything was this dude talking about teen girls. Like he basically used very flowery metaphors to talk about vaginas and girls getting wet and he wrote it all in a really creepy gross way and I am so not ok with that. Yeah he was rude to 1D but as Harry said (while smiling I might add) “oh it’s easy to have a pop at the kids from x factor, thing is his kids are coming to our show saturday…” like 1D are laughing all the way to the stadium and back and then to the bank so they can buy their amazing houses and invest in gold and art. What I have a real problem with is condensing the whole of the female fan experience into some gross out sexual innuendo. Yeah I bet 1D has been a sexual awakening for a lot of girls, but why don’t we talk about the fact that there is a mostly positive community of fanfiction writers, blog runners, girls who do amazing edits on photoshop that could be used for fucking graphic design jobs, girls who have become friends with each other and find great happiness in listening to One Direction because they actually like the music, or even girls who just find them to be attractive and that gives them joy as well or just the people who could write a fucking AU fanfic of a journalist meeting the boys better than that GQ article. It’s boring and tired to hear metaphor after metephor for the fact that a lot of girls get excited and scream at their concerts GUESS WHAT I DON’T CARE YOU BURBERRY LEATHER JACKET WEARING TWAT.
